The Vampire Diaries

April 24, 2010

Dear students,
Recently I have read The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening by L. J. Smith. The first book was really good so I rate it a ten out of ten star rating. I would give it that rating because many reasons. The author is very descriptive that I can read the book and it is like watching a movie. Colors, people, scenes, places, and so on are things I can see in the “movie“. Another reason is because the book is a fun, enjoying book to read. It was a type of book that when you start to read it, it would be hard to put it down, and when you are not reading the book, you would really want to. The characters are the ones that you can relate to in real life which makes the book more enjoyable. More interesting and easier to understand.

As known, the characters are relatable and interesting. One of the main characters is Elena. She is a regular girl that is popular and likes attention. She has three friends and one friend enemy. Her three friends stick by her side in good times, scary times, and bad times throughout the book. Her friend enemy tries to embarrass her, get up with the guy she wants to be with, and makes a fool out of her. Though Elena, is a strong, independent girl that she knows what she wants. If she does not get what she wants, she will do something about that no matter what it takes. Though when a new student comes along called Stefan, she goes all crazy about him. Then, she starts to want to know more about him, and go out with him. So, she tries everything she possibly can to get to him. Though, when her heart is broken, she does not deal with things so strongly. Not to long later though, she is strong and getting back to Stefan again. Not quitting for what she wants in her life. Elena does not care about what anyone thinks about Stefan, especially when weird things start to happen.

A second main character is Stefan. He is the guy that when people know about him, the girls want to be with him, or just to know about him. Though, what no one knows, is that he, is not a regular, normal, type of guy. When he came back to town, everyone started to act weird. Things were weird. Things started to happen that people such as the police, could not understand. Murders which police can not figure out who, or what, did it. His voice is always low and calm. He never really gets mad, or frustrated on the outside, but he does on the inside. Stefan is like the black cat on Friday the thirteenth. Mysterious. Something that Elena thinks that makes him mysterious, is that of, that he is the only one that can resist her. Plus, he is holding a very big secret on his shoulders, that no one but his brother and him, know what that secret is, and Elena is determined to find out what the secret is.

A third main character that really comes into play at the end is Damon, or Stefan’s older brother. When it comes to girls, Stefan is jealous of his older brother. Most people/ things, think Damon is handsomer than Stefan, concluding that Stefan does not like people to meet his older brother. That, and that Stefan swears that his brother is not willing to be alive, or to have anything to do with the big secret. Something about Damon, is that, he is the most dangerous one of all. He is tricky, a liar, and a stealer. He does not care about any one but him. He uses people for his own needs, and wants. He thinks that life is a game, and it does not work out well for other people that he comes across on.

A fourth main character is Katherine. She is a beautiful young girl. In the book a puzzling story is told to Elena about Katherine from Stefan. Elena, now wonders, if Stefan actually likes her, or, if he just likes her for how she looks like his old Katherine. Though Elena, does love Stefan. Someone else likes Elena, or just wants to be with Elena because of Katherine, and that is Damon. Throughout the book, Damon watches Elena and Stefan. He messes with Stefan’s mind to try to get him to give up. Then he shows up and no one wants him there.

A quote that really impacted me was, “ ‘Look, swearing with blood is dangerous,’ Bonnie protested seriously. ‘It means you have to stick to your oath no matter what happens, no matter what, Meredith.’” The reason this impacted me is because that it is true, that it is dangerous, and that it is, not safe at all. You could die about those things. And when you commit to do something like that, you would, or, should, definitely stick to it. Mainly, because by doing that procedure, you could be giving up your life. That is why today, everything that we found out through technology, should be taken for granted. To have this information could save lives, but, still, people decide to not take it for granted, and, still, people loose their lives. And today, it is something that everyone needs to think about. A different thing is about wanting to be blood sister/ brothers, which is as bad as swearing with blood.

One of the things I said that I liked about this book is that it is very descriptive. Everything looked like a movie in my mind. I could see big, and, little things that were happening throughout the book. When they are at school, in the woods, in the cemetery, and even how there houses are set up. I could see everything clearly. This book also has some cliff hangers. Especially at the end of the first book. It was like when you are about to fall off something, or trip, and the last few seconds feel like the whole world froze, or that the whole world slowed for a few seconds and you freak out. The urge to go forward is powerful. You always want to go forward in this book, but, there are other things that you have to do besides reading.

Another thing that is good about this book, is that it has many different emotions in it. There is romantic, sad, happy, drama, scariness, and more. Pretty much anything that you can think of. So no matter if you are a girl, and maybe a guy, you would like these books. It is not too difficult to read, and it is not too easy to read. It is not a serious book, which a lot of people like it not to be. It doesn’t make you annoyed, and it does not make you bored by reading this.
