Push

Dear Mrs. Monaco
I have recently read the novel PUSH, which is now a movie tilted precious. This book is about an African American girl named precious who has a lot
of hard times in her life. When Precious was twelve she had her first child.
It surprised me when I first learned that Precious had her first child at age twelve. She was sexually abused by her father from age four and he raped her and got her pregnant at age twelve. When her mother found out she was pregnant she kicked Precious in the head and beat her. Precious had her child, her child was born with down syndrome and was living with her grandmother.
There was a lot of character development in this story, in the beginning of the story Precious had no self confidence, did not know how to read or write (even though she was 16) and had no friends. Precious went to a normal school where she attended class, however she was unable to learn. She soon got kicked out of school because her father had sexually assaulted her again and gotten her pregnant again. Her teacher recommended that she go to an alternative school called Each One Teach One, Precious did attent classes at this school and was soom a ble to read and write and she also made friends.
Precious had her second child and named it Abdul, he was borne perfectly healthy. She ran away from home and her mother did not care. One day Preciouses mother came into the facility that Precious was staying at and asked to speak with her, Precious' mother informed her that her father had died. The cause of death was HIV, a STD. This scared Precious and so she got tested for the aweful disease, the test came back positive, but Precious did not let the disease controll her, she continued school and raised her chjild. The quote that i chose was "My disease does not make me who I am".
I would rate this book a 10 out of 10. I enjoyed this book so much because of how she took her problems and got through them. This book is for mature readers only. I Say that because in this book it describes her sexualll abuse in great detail, this book is also a very sad book. I do not understand how a father could sexually abuse his child or how a mother could beat her child with no remorse at all.
I made a connection with this book and with the book A Child Called It. the connestion is that both mothers beat their children. I think that their is a lesson here, the lesson is that child abuse is a serous problem and that it can happen to anybody, anywhere, anyage, anytime. In the two books however the children are different ages.
