Heidi
by Samantha B.
Dear Ms. Monaco,
I recently finished Heidi by Johanna Spyri. This is the second time I have read this book. On a scale of one to ten I would give it an eight. While it is good it is not my favorite. It catches your attention and makes you want to keep reading. Most books can do that. Something that makes this book so good is that it has good character development.

I wonder how Johanna came up with this idea. Before I read this it never occurred to me how if your parents die somebody will have to take care of you. The aunt had to take Heidi and she did not like it. The aunt in my perspective sounded really mean. If I think about it my family is average. My family is very active in sports compared to Heidi. I can see how being an only child could be kind of boring. At the same time I can see where it would be fun. If you were an only child you could do and get a lot more. While having siblings you might not be able to get that much extra stuff you can get easily entertained. You can get bored with nobody to play with. When the ages are all spread out you can tease the smaller ones and bug the older ones. I think it is really nice when you and your siblings get along. Also it is a pain and a lot of money to travel with three or four kids. With one or two you can go places and it will not cost as much. I am very glad to have three siblings. I don’t have to go anywhere to talk or play with somebody. Being an only child while it may be fun it may have it’s downs.
In this book they can jump and play. If you could choose where you would live where would it be? Would it be a mountain, an island, a valley, a plain, a beach, or a hill? I would live on a beach/island or a mountain. In all of those you could see the stars or the moon. Also you could see the sun rise and set. The scenery would be beautiful. While the scenery would be beautiful you would be lonesome and it would take a long time to get supplies. Even with those drawbacks I would still choose those. Even though you would feel isolated you could do many things and not worry about neighbors. Like if you are outside late at night with friends the neighbors ,

Even though you would feel isolated you could do many things and not worry about neighbors. Like if you are outside late at night with friends the neighbors , that you do not have, can sleep. Another thing that makes you want to live their is the animals. You could see birds and rabbits. I know we have those in our community now but these would be in their natural habitat and would act differently. You could also pick wildflowers and not get in trouble from the recreation directors of parks. Pets would not be a problem to anyone and they could have a little more space. Living on a mountain, island or beach would mean that I would always have active weather. By active weather I mean it is always doing something. It would probably be raining, snowing, or cloudy.

In this book the Grandfather tried to make his utopia. It worked until Heidi came. This is like The Giver. The Giver tries to make a utopia but it does not work. It does not work in this book either. While making what he wants the Grandfather gets rid of fun, friends, and feelings. when you get rid of feelings you get rid of the whole meaning of life. Without feelings you could die and nobody would care it would be like a pair of shoes that don’t fit. You would not want them and toss them aside.

"Oh how beautiful! Crimson snow! Oh now all the rocks are turning gray—now the color is all gone. Now it is all over Peter." was the quote I chose. I chose it because it sounds so beautiful. Also because it makes her want to see it again. That would be the best site ever. If you could choose to see it everynight wouldn’t you? I would and it would stay in my mind forever.

Sincerely,
Sam B.
