Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Dear 7th Graders, April 25, 2010

I recently just finished reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. I think it is realistic fiction because teh things that happened to Greg could really happen to any kid around their teen years.

I would rate Diary of a Wimpy Kid an eight. I would rate it an eight because I thought it was funny and good but I also thought it was somewhat wierd. This book does show how life in middle school can be a pain.

The main character is named Greg Heffley. Greg is a kid who is just entering middle school and he is short and wimpy. He is the middle child of three boys. His older brother bullies him at home. His younger brother gets all the attention by his parents. He only has one friend and his name is Rowley.

I liked the way the author put the book in actual diary form. I like how the print looks like a middle schooler wrote the diary. I also like how he put some pictures in the stroy so you could really understand what was happening to Greg with a visual out look.

I think that by reading this book it will help me when I will be entering high school. It will help because I most likely will be a little afraid by the upper classmen. If I get made fun of at school I will not take it personal and come back to school with a positive attitude. It will show me to go through the tough times and not mind.

I would say the theme of this book is to stay strong through hard times and it will all be worth while in the long run. I think that because even though Greg was picked on at school he still came back to school every day and lived with it. He took one day at a time. He might not of been a very strong kid phyiscally but mentally he was a very strong kid.

I think that the author wrote this book to explain the way school can be. Also maybe the things that happened to Greg in this book happened to the author. Perhaps the author just wanted to express his feelings about bullies. I think writing this book helped him make a point to bullies, that they do really hurt people not just physically.

The structure of this book is like a diary. It is written by months and weeks. Jeff Kinney wrote it as if a kid were writing in a real diary. He also added pictures in the book/diary. The pictures really helped me see the things that happened. He even had the book written in diffrent type of font.

This is how I read the book. First I would read a couple of pages and then I would get sticky notes amd write bloom questions for me to think about. I alos put sticky notes where i thought good quotes were at. The sticky notes really helped me choose what quote to use and helped me wirte this letter essay.

This book reminds me of middle school. It reminds me of middle school because there are wimpy kids taht get made fun of at school. There are also kids that do not have very many friends at school either. Also when people find out about something someone did that was bad or wierd a lot of the kids try to avoid the person.

I was struck by this passage "It meant that I have the cheese touch". It showed me that Greg was very upset about that because it meant a lot of people will avoid him at school. He was upset because he really does not have many friends and now most likely no one will talk to him now at school.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid was a very meaningfull and intersting book. It really taught me how the people feel when they have no or only one friend. it taught me that I should be nice to everyone and if I see someone sitting alone I will go sit by them instead of sitting with my friends. I am excited to read the next Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I also am planning on going to see the movie sometime soon.
