Uglies

Dear Mrs. Monaco

The book I read was called the Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and the genre was realistic fiction. I really enjoyed this book because I could relate this book to a lot of other books. Some of the books I could relate to were, The Giver, The Clique, and Every Soul a Star. This book had many things I have never heard or read about. I would say this was a complicated book to follow, because they are always switching what is going on. Though it was hard to follow it kept my mind alert.

The reason I could relate this book to others especially to the giver is because it is in a future setting. Also the government controls both there minds and feelings in both books and in the uglies they have monitors that watch what they are doing like they have speakers in the giver that can hear. They also have like levels for growing up so when you are younger you would live with someone and then go to another area then go to a teen place. It is just similar in those ways like it is in the giver. There is also a person who knows about what is going on like there is that one person who bears everything for them.

The way I thought that the book was complicated to follow is because they have different feelings so when it switches to a new setting so do there feelings. It is like saying hey a mad at her in this chapter and all the sudden I am happy for know reason. I figured out then you really need to pay attention to what is going on for them to change so sudden. The way it changes can be affected by many things to sometimes they take pills to have them change. You get the hang of it after a while though.

The quote I thought that was important is “This whole game is deigned to make us hate ourselves.” The reason I thought this quote was important is because how this society works is by taking regular kids when they are sixteen and turning them in to pretty people. These people then have lesions on there brain to not have a mind. So these adults tell these kids the only way to grow up is to grow up pretty so they try every thing to make these kids want to be pretty. So how they show them is in there school at home every where they even tell them in books. It shows you how some people see that and how they try to tell people but they do not listen.

The setting really affects the story because it is in the future and we the Rustiest it is what they call old Americans have ruined the world by using up gas and cutting to many trees. Anyway they are trying to rebuild the forest so many areas are crossed off, but there are other inhabitants that are trying to live there. They also built new crazy structures so there way of getting around is by hover board and it is all magnetic and they use solar power. So it really helps the story add its effects to and from it.

Some of the things I really liked about this book were the authors prospected on the book. I really liked this because sometimes you can see it usually from the characters view but sometimes from its surroundings to. Something I didn’t care much about is the items and stuff they really described it. They usually were not important sometimes it is but usually it isn’t. They were good and bad stuff in the book but I enjoyed most of it.

I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys future stuff and crazy mind people. Though I think this is a romantic book so it is more for girls. Here are some reasons people would enjoy this book. First there is lots of action in this book and crazy hover boarding tricks. Second there is plenty of romance and love jealousy to enjoy. I think almost everybody who reads this is will love it.

Sincerly,
